Advanced Yoga Studies FAQ

The Mission of Unity Yoga as taught at Southwest Institute of Healing Arts

The mission of Unity Yoga is to teach an authentic expression of yoga with a transformational approach, honoring a diversity of practices and belief systems. Our program is based on the principle that yoga is a unifying tool for creating health, well-being and a deep spiritual connection. Our commitment is to provide structure, yet educational freedom, so all may find their own truth, while incorporating a ‘living yoga’ approach to their lives.

What is the basis of this advanced study of yoga teacher training?

The SWIHA Advanced Yoga Studies program emphasizes a deep study and understanding of the yogic philosophies and practical applications of the eight limbs of yoga both on and off the mat. Students will build on their foundational knowledge from the 200-hour training and use it to enrich their abilities to both practice and share all aspects of the yoga practice.

What experience and background knowledge is required to take this training?

Students are required to have graduated from a 200-hour Yoga Alliance-certified teacher training program. Students are required to have completed their practicum of teaching and observing /assisting hours.

How much teaching experience is required to enroll in this program?

Where it is helpful and recommended to have as much teaching and practice experience as possible, SWIHA accepts students who have completed the required hours of teaching to be registered with Yoga Alliance at the 200-hour level.

Why is it important to take this advanced course of study?

Where a 200-hour yoga teaching program lays an excellent foundation for the continuing practitioner and interested teacher, the Advanced Yoga Studies Program takes the student to a new level of understanding and provides the tools to share the practice skillfully with a wide population. Delving deeply into the philosophical study and applications of the yoga practice, an advanced teacher has the tools to share the teachings not only in traditional yoga settings, but to communities where the applied science may be a novel and potent tool. For example, an advanced yoga teacher from this course might create a business to train corporate employees in stress management by applying Eastern methodology along with Western strategies.

The advanced course of study gives you the tools and understanding to become a master teacher who can think outside the box and adapt the science of yoga for each and every kind of student.

What makes SWIHA Yoga Teacher Training different than other teacher trainings?

SWIHA Yoga Teacher Training draws its elements from a variety of long-established yoga traditions. Our students are fortunate to receive and experience the wealth of talent that resides both within and beyond our local SWIHA community.

Is this program only for those who want to become a yoga teacher?

The program offers each student the opportunity to tap into the teacher within. The student may use the tools and skills for teaching yoga or other therapies, or simply to heighten their own understanding of the practice itself. This course of study is geared to move the student toward personal transformation through which their highest potential is uncovered.
